How can I help?

Dear Friends:

We are writing to you on behalf of the CDM Community Aquatics Facilities Foundation, comprised of members of the Newport Beach aquatics community.  CCAFF oversees  the planning, construction and fund-raising needed to update and upgrade the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center on the campus of Corona del Mar High School.

From the day the facility opened in 1990, participation in aquatics activities has enjoyed explosive growth in Newport Beach.  A flagship aquatics facility and a valuable community asset, MBAC embodies Newport Beach’s rich aquatics traditions, ranging from high school water polo and swim teams, to a wide range of community youth and adult aquatics programs.  It has been and continues to be a frequent and favorite venue for many regional, national, and international aquatics competitions.

We are delighted to report that the first three phases of the renovation project valued at approximately $1.3 million have been completed with funds contributed by the Newport Mesa Unified School District, the City of Newport Beach, and the community.  Completed improvements include:

                  • Replastered pool and refurbished deck and drainage systems
                  • Shade structures over bleachers

                  • New state-of-the-art scoreboard and wireless event management system
                  • New pool & deck lighting
                  • Renovated existing building to include new coaches' offices and work stations
                  • Installed trophy cases & new audio-visual equipment in team room
                  • Remodeled equipment storage rooms Installed trophy cases & new audio-visual equipment in team room
                  • Renovated snack bar
                  • Murals depicting CDM Aquatics “honor wall” & logos of the girls’ and boys’ water polo teams

Those who use the facility (Newport Beach’s athletes, students, children, and recreational users) need a safe and secure place to change, shower and store their gear.  The new building includes new men's and women's toilet facilities, 20 new showers, and over 150 lockers. Phase 4 will cost more than $1,100,000 to design & build.  Plans have been approved, and construction bids are in hand. About $800,000 have been contributed by the Newport Mesa Unified School District, the City of Newport Beach, and members of the community.  But we need another $300,000 to fully fund the project.  As soon as the remaining funds are raised, construction can get underway--even as early as summer of 2012.  We know this is an ambitious goal, but having a safe and secure facility is long overdue.

P.S. Help “anchor” the last leg of the renovation of CDM’s pool --where Newport Beach learns vital water safety skills, trains, competes, and plays. Take advantage of a limited opportunity to buy a stunning, custom-crafted blue, green, and violet iridescent glass fish, personalized with your athlete's, family's, or business entity's name etched in gold letters. Your fish will become part of the Sea King's "school of fish" mural, destined to be the "crown jewel" of MBAC, which will be situated on the wall of the new facility. Don't miss out!!
